What is a Slip On Flange and how does it differ from other flange types?

A Slip On Flange (SO Flange) is a type of pipe flange that is slipped over the pipe and then welded in place. It differs from other flanges as follows:

  1. Design –

    • SO flange has a straight bore with no hub.
    • Weld Neck flange has a long tapered hub that provides reinforcement.
  2. Welding –

    • SO flange requires two fillet welds (inside & outside).
    • Weld Neck flange requires a butt weld.
  3. Strength –

    • SO flanges are suitable for low- to medium-pressure systems.
    • Weld Neck flanges are used for high-pressure and high-stress applications.
  4. Cost & Installation –

    • SO flanges are cheaper and easier to align.
    • Weld Neck flanges are costlier but stronger.
  • Pipe Preparation:

    • The pipe end is cut square and cleaned.
  • Insertion:

    • The pipe is inserted into the bore of the SO flange until it touches the flange face.
  • Welding:

    • One fillet weld is applied on the outside of the pipe–flange joint.
    • A second fillet weld is applied on the inside of the bore.
  • Strength Advantage:

    • Dual welds improve the mechanical strength and leak tightness.
  • Choose Slip On Flange when:

    • Pressure is low to medium.
    • Space for installation is restricted.
    • Cost needs to be minimized.
    • Quick alignment is important.
  • Avoid Slip On Flange when:

    • The system experiences cyclic loading.
    • The service involves very high pressure or temperature.
    • Stress transfer is critical (in that case, Weld Neck is better).
