SS 309 is a high-chromium, nickel austenitic stainless steel engineered for excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures, typically up to 1,000°C in continuous service. Its chromium (23–25%) and nickel (12–15%) content provides superior high-temperature strength and scale resistance, making it ideal for industrial furnaces, heat exchangers, and chemical processing equipment. SS 309 exhibits good creep and tensile strength, along with excellent weldability and formability, suitable for buttweld and forged fittings, flanges, and piping components subjected to cyclic thermal stress.
SS 309S is the low-carbon variant of SS 309, specifically designed to minimize carbide precipitation during welding and prevent sensitization. Maintaining the high chromium and nickel content of SS 309, SS 309S delivers enhanced corrosion resistance in high-temperature and oxidizing environments while offering improved weldability. This grade is widely used for buttweld fittings, forged components, and flanges in applications such as furnace parts, kilns, and chemical reactors, where thermal cycling and corrosion are critical concerns.
SS 310 is a high-chromium and high-nickel austenitic stainless steel, formulated to resist oxidation and scaling at temperatures up to 1,100°C. With approximately 24–26% chromium and 19–22% nickel, it provides excellent high-temperature strength, creep resistance, and thermal stability, making it suitable for boilers, superheaters, furnace components, and high-temperature piping systems. SS 310 also retains good ductility and weldability, allowing it to be fabricated into buttweld fittings, forged fittings, and flanges for extreme industrial conditions.
SS 310S is the low-carbon version of SS 310, optimized to prevent sensitization and intergranular corrosion during welding while maintaining the high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance of SS 310. It exhibits superior creep and tensile properties under sustained high-temperature loads and is commonly used in chemical, petrochemical, and power plant piping systems. SS 310S is particularly suitable for buttweld fittings, forged fittings, flanges, and heat-resistant piping assemblies where both thermal stability and corrosion resistance are required.
